ABOUT JEMIMA JOHANNA

Jemima Johanna writes art rock music with a special focus on song-storytelling. Growing up in a musical household, she enrolled at the Kunstkoepel Academie voor Muziek en Theater, with a focus on piano alongside solfège, composing, vocals, and music history. Nowadays she performs music and poetry in the the Netherlands, where she lives.

The process of writing music is important to Jemima Johanna. After finishing her studies in History of Immigration at Leiden University with a focus on Oral History, she was inspired to use interviews as the source material for her songs. She explores and challenges themes of immigration, identity, neurodiversity, and the human psyche.

I want to be there for you silence,
When words are not enough to see
- excerpt from original song “Spring”

Jemima Johanna’s work is best described as Songs of Lamentation. Her main aim is to reach out an invitation for transformative listening through the stories of those that feel like they do not fit in. Their memories and experiences told during an interview are translated into a song, creating a space for harmony between two parties: the storyteller and an open-minded listener. Currently Jemima Johanna is recording her debut album OUTSIDER that will be released in 2024.
